HG: Pattern of light and shadow vaguely suggests the French tri-color, flag of the nation of orgin for this famous individual.

HG: The man himself. This is very true to the original , which lent itself well to the stencil medium.

Postlude: Some concluding notes by the photographer, after the fact.

HG: Took some more time to look around your site too. A lot of really interesting information. Guess I kind of lost interest in graffiti about the time it was really taking off and there's a lot that's happened since that I'm not in touch with. Think I'll start paying a little closer attention and your site gave me a good start.

I do have a few random comments (or perhaps answers to unasked questions):

On the "Golden Age of Gang Graffiti" title, It's just something that I hit on at the time. Others might dispute that subjective claim and perhaps with good reason. Maybe if I'd realized how much interest there would be I wouldn't have used it. It should be taken as it was meant -- not too seriously.

One thing I've noticed is that, though the written word plays a big role in gang tattoo motifs, the gang graffiti styles of lettering are not particular popular. Script, Gothic and block letters seem to be much preferred. I don't the reason for this, just strikes me as curious.

Did you happen the read the comment someone left for the "Bozo" placa? It was perhaps the strangest lettering in the set but I never guessed that there was the face of a clown in the lettering. These days writers get a lot more clever than that but back then you didn't see much to compare.
